Technical Illustration Pricing & Styles

The examples below show a range of technical illustration style options and the approximate cost of each option. The "base price" for the simplist illustration style is a relative starting point. Assuming that the illustration (base price) is $ 1,000.00, for the first example "Flat, Plan, or Elevation Section View - Line Art". The price for the second illustration example "Section View - Line and Tone" would be $ 1,500.00 or (base price x 1.5).

Flat, Plan, or Elevation Section View - Line Art

(This is the least complex style of illustration.)

Section View - Line and Tone

Pricing: Base Price x 1.5

Section View - Fully Rendered

Pricing: Base Price x 2

3/4 Perspective View - Line Art

Pricing: Base Price x 2

3/4 Perspective View - Line and Tone

Pricing: Base Price x 2.5

3/4 Perspective View - Continuous Tone or Fully Rendered

(This is the most complex style of illustration.)

Pricing: Base Price x 3

Cutaway (left) vs. "Ghosted" or "Phantom View" (right)

A Ghosted illustration would be slightly more expensive than a Cutaway Illustration. Ghosting an object requires completion of the entire outside AND inside of the subject before the fading or "ghosting" process takes place. The decision to ghost or cutaway a subject is mostly a stylistic one. Although more internal information may be visible in a cutaway version, a ghosted illustration will favor the exterior of the subject which may contain important components, body features, logos, etc.

The following four diagrams show the various types of 3/4 view illustrations.

3/4 Perspective View

(This type of illustration looks more "natural" than an Axonometric View.)

Axonometric Views

(These illustration types are more appropriate for diagrams and manuals.)
